Two trips, one savings pace. Japan for sakura in late March, Iceland in July. About $5,500 each, $11,000 together, $1,000 a month.
Two trips that should not stay trapped in a chat. Japan first — Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto — timed for late-March sakura. Iceland second — Reykjavik and the south coast — in July, when the highland roads are open and the light barely leaves.
The budgets are real working numbers for one traveler from the US, mid-range, not hostel and not Six Senses the hotel. About $5,480 for Japan, $5,520 for Iceland, $11,000 together. At $1,000 a month from late September 2026, Japan is covered before departure. Iceland is covered in August unless the pace rises a little, or a small pot is already set aside.
One pot. Japan first, then Iceland. Move the monthly number to see when each trip is covered.
Covered Mar 7, 2027 · Target Mar 28, 2027
Covered Aug 20, 2027 · Target Jul 12, 2027
Both trips are covered by August 2027 at this pace. Hitting both on time wants about $1,135 a month.
Eleven nights. Fly into Haneda or Narita, out of Kansai if the fare is kind. Keep Tokyo tight, give Kyoto the quieter mornings, and put one night in Hakone between them so the trip has a pause.

Nine nights. Land in Keflavik, sleep in Reykjavik, then take a car down the south coast. July is for waterfalls, long evenings, and roads that are actually open — not for the aurora.
Skip the Blue Lagoon on landing day if the flight is late. A local pool does the same work for less money and less theater.

$1,000 a month, untouched. Japan first, then Iceland.
At this pace the Japan pot fills just before departure. Book flights in December, lodging in January.
Sakura in the city is a crowd. Walk the quieter east-side parks in the morning.
One night of water and wood, then four days of Kyoto at human speed.
On $1,000 a month the Iceland pot is still a little short in July. Raise the pace, start with a balance, or let the trip slip toward August.
Eleven thousand, eleven months. The calculator above moves these dates if the monthly number changes.
One account. Two envelopes in the same place — Japan, then Iceland. Do not split the monthly transfer across cards and apps. If a month is missed, the calculator already tells you what the next month has to do.
Fares move. The Japan flight line is the one most likely to jump. Lock it when a round trip from the West Coast sits under $1,400, or from the East Coast under $1,200. Iceland is cheaper to hold until spring unless a sub-$600 fare appears.
This File is a plan, not a booking. Sense can turn any line into a reservation when you are ready.
A full JR Pass is often wrong for this route. Price Tokyo–Kyoto as a single Shinkansen.
July is usually fine on the south coast. Still read the map the morning you drive.
Late March in Tokyo is the working assumption. Kyoto follows by a few days.
